Following up on yesterday’s post, the strategy that is most effective to increase the number of people you talk to, your leads, and the L in the Sales Velocity Formula, is effective marketing.

I have to confess to wasting years walking the desert of mediocre results because I didn’t understand the difference between marketing and sales. In this post, I am going to lay out the three stages of marketing and give the credit for what I learned to Alan Dibb, author of the 1 Page Marketing Plan. There’s little magical here because we’ve all heard that to be successful in sales now we need to earn the trust of our prospects, also known as Know, Like and Trust. What I found informative, even revelatory, was how easy it is to understand marketing when it is broken down into three stages when viewed through that prism.

The first stage is the Lead Phase when we are establishing credibility and likability with our prospect. Skipping this phase to get right to a closed sale will probably lead to failure in the majority of cases. The “How to” is where we get into the strategies we might employ to attract people and begins with identifying and recognizing who it is we want to attract, our target market, and our Avatar.

The second stage is the Customer phase, where the prospect has moved to complete their first purchase. At this point, the goal is to continue marketing so that the customer becomes a raving fan and is likely to become a lifetime client.

The third stage is the Loyal Customer/Client phase where the marketing effort is to recognize the customer’s loyalty, earn referrals from that customer and continue to provide win-win-win opportunities.
